Dexter neighborhoods and small-town life

A small town just west of Ann Arbor, with older homes near a busy downtown and more spread-out neighborhoods beyond.

Living in Dexter

Dexter is a small community just west of Ann Arbor with a busy downtown. Depending on where you live, Ann Arbor is about 10 to 20 minutes away, and the freeway is close. I lived in Dexter for 14 years, so I know the town from the inside.

Much of Dexter life centers on downtown and the park. A gazebo in the park hosts community events, a skating rink opens in winter, and live music fills summer Friday nights. Festivals run through the year, and in summer the downtown restaurants set out tables outside.

Dexter neighborhoods fall into two groups, and knowing the difference is the first step in finding the right home here.

Dexter neighborhoods and homes

Near downtown, Dexter has older homes on streets with sidewalks. From these blocks you can walk to the restaurants, the park, and the trail. The homes have the character that comes with age, and they tend to sit closer together.

Beyond downtown, the neighborhoods are more spread out. Homes sit farther apart, and you'll usually drive into town instead of walking. Some buyers want that extra room, and others would rather be on a sidewalk a few minutes from downtown.

That's the main trade-off in Dexter. Its neighborhoods are more spread out than Ann Arbor's, so the right choice depends on how you want to spend your days. When we look at homes here, I'll make sure you see both sides of town before you decide.

Getting around: the trail and the drive to Ann Arbor

Several access points to the Border-to-Border Trail start right from downtown Dexter. The trail gives you a place to walk, run, or ride without getting in the car.

For work, Ann Arbor is 10 to 20 minutes east depending on your street, and the freeway is close by. That keeps Ann Arbor jobs within easy reach while you come home to a smaller town.

How I help buyers and sellers in Dexter

Because Dexter has two very different kinds of neighborhood, pricing a home here takes close local comparisons. A home near downtown and a home farther out appeal to different buyers, so I compare yours with the homes that actually sold nearby, and we price your home together. See what your Dexter home is worth or read about selling your home in Dexter.

For buyers, I start by showing you both sides of Dexter so you can decide which one fits. If you're moving from out of state, I can walk through homes with you on a FaceTime video call. Read more about buying a home in Dexter or relocating to Dexter.

If you're considering Dexter, call me or send a note. You can also compare it with Chelsea, a little farther west, or with Ann Arbor.
