If you own and live in a home in Ann Arbor or anywhere in Washtenaw County, you may qualify for the Principal Residence Exemption (PRE)—Michigan’s homestead exemption.
This benefit can reduce your property taxes by removing school operating taxes from your bill, resulting in real yearly savings.

Filing is required—this is not automatic, and missing it means paying higher property taxes
It applies only to your primary residence, and you can claim just one at a time
You must both own and live in the home to qualify
Rental or investment properties are not eligible
File with your local assessor; you may need proof of residency, and late filing can delay your savings

You must file with your local assessor’s office based on where your property is located.
For Ann Arbor and surrounding Washtenaw County areas, this is handled through your city or township assessor’s office, such as:
Ann Arbor
Pittsfield Township
Scio Township
Ypsilanti City / Township
Saline
Dexter
Each municipality has its own filing process and requirements.
